A Redmond hunter injured when he slipped on an icy trail near Todd Lake called for assistance with his portable radio and was rescued Thursday evening by Deschutes County search and rescue personnel, said authorities.

A Redmond woman died Wednesday from injuries she received in a near head-on crash Tuesday night, said authorities. Melissa Renee Kruse, 32, suffered critical injuries when her car drifted over the centerline of Deschutes Market Road and was hit by a van, leaving her unconscious and trapped in her vehicle.

New State and National Data Released
Despite a 39% decline in the state teen birth rate between 1991 and 2004, teen childbearing in Oregon cost taxpayers (federal, state, and local) at least $91 million in 2004, according to a new analysis released by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Of these costs, 32% were federal costs and 68% were state and local costs. The national public sector costs of teen childbearing total $9.1 billion. ... Fire specialists plan to complete a controlled burn this afternoon in an area seven miles southeast of Bend where they burned 45 acres on Thursday.
Friday’s 40-acre burn will be south of China Hat Road and a half mile north of Kelsey Butte. OSP Report: Drivers clocked at speeds in excess of 130 mph
