A 20-year old Salem man was arrested Tuesday night for reckless driving and other traffic offenses when a deputy clocked his speed in excess of 130-mph on Interstate 5.

A 56-year old Bandon woman was killed Tuesday night when she lost control of her vehicle and drove off Highway 101, shearing off a utility pole before crossing an intersection and crashing into a tree. Oregon State Police (OSP) reported she was not using safety restraints.

Oregon State Police are completing an investigation into the death of a 78-year old Newport man who died early Tuesday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being found in the men's restroom at Gleneden Beach State Park on Monday.

According to preliminary statistics, 505 inspections resulted in 54 vehicles and 85 drivers placed out-of-service for equipment and driver-related safety violations during last week's three-day interagency commercial vehicle inspection at the Interstate 5 southbound Woodburn Port of Entry. This inspection and enforcement effort was the 12th truck check operation since the program began in 1998 targeting impairment and vehicle safety.

A father and son, both California residents, were arrested today in connection with the fatal hit and run collision in Bend early yesterday morning when a 41-year old Bend woman was struck and killed while riding a bicycle on Third Street near Powers Road. Police report the vehicle involved was later set afire and reported stolen to hinder the investigation.

TIJUANA, Mexico - Wednesday killed a security guard and took five hostages at a Tijuana, Mexico, hospital in an apparent effort to free a prisoner undergoing treatment.
Police blocked off surrounding streets and killed one gunman in an exchange of gunfire, El Universal reported online.
A second gunman was reportedly still inside the hospital with the hostages.

MALATYA, Turkey - Attackers in Malatya, Turkey, slit the throats of three people Wednesday at a company that publishes Bibles.
Security officials told Today's Zaman, Turkey's third-largest newspaper, that four people were detained after the killings at the Zirve Publishing House. The lone survivor, who jumped off the building apparently to escape the attackers, was hospitalized and listed in critical condition with a head injury, the report said.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A Virginia Tech University teacher said she had tried to get counseling for Cho Seung-Hui, who killed 32 people before taking his own life at the college.

Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) Director Katy Coba has approved a gypsy moth eradication project planned for next month in a residential area of Bend in Deschutes County. The project will involve three aerial applications of the biological insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (B.t.k.), which has been used routinely in other gypsy moth eradication projects in Oregon since 1984.
