Summer fire restrictions begin June 1 for the City of Bend and Deschutes County Fire District #2, officials announced Friday. Open burning within the Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 will close Wednesday, May 31st at dark. Travel will be up slightly this Memorial Day holiday despite high gas prices and increasing vacation costs, according to AAA. AAA estimates that 37.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday, a 0.9 percent increase from last year. The Deschutes County Sheriffs Office issued a warning Friday about a possible donation scam involving its Search and Rescue unit. Sgt, Dan Swearingen said a Prineville resident reported receiving a phone call around 3 p.m. Thursday in which the number was blocked and listed as out of the area. Save Our Canals Association is a group of concerned property owners; we number about 100 property owners that live along the Swalley and the Central Oregon Irrigation Districts canals.
