A woman suspected of shooting to death a 36-year old man in southeast Portland early this morning led police on a high-speed car chase in Central Oregon before sideswiping a truck in Terrebonne, continuing on to Redmond, fleeing on foot with a handgun, then shooting herself in the head while officers attempted to negotiate with her.

The Tualatin Valley Highway was closed Tuesday morning as a rescue helicopter evacuated a man seriously injured when he pulled out from a parking lot into the path of an oncoming SUV, authorities reported.

Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division troopers are investigating the theft of body parts from a dead gray whale that beached near Seal Rock on the Oregon coast Sunday morning.
The deceased 41-foot female whale, estimated to be between five and ten years old, had been floating in the surf by Newport for a couple days prior to washing ashore.

The body of a man discovered near St. Johns Bridge on the Willamette River Saturday morning has been positively identified, and the Multnomah County Medical Examiner sasy the cause of death is probable drowning.
Multnomah County Sheriff’s investigators say there is no sign of foul play in the death of 60-year old James Lynn Robertson of Portland.

PHOENIX - U.S. airlines are predicting the number of travelers who get bumped from flights because of overbooking will reach a 10-year high this summer.
Most airlines are running closer to capacity than ever, with an expected 85 percent full this summer, which means all the seats on popular routes will be taken, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Deputies say details are sketchy, but one young man was taken to the hospital with minor stab wounds and two others drowned in the Topsy Reservoir near Keno in Klamath County Tuesday evening.
According to a Klamath County Sheriff’s Office news release, investigators believe that about six young men were above the river on a 20-foot ledge commonly used as a dive platform when a scuffle broke out about 7 p.m., May 29.

WASHINGTON - The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee said he wants to again interview former CIA officer Valerie Plame.
Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., said Plame has given inconsistent accounts of how her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, was sent to Africa to investigate reports that Iraq was trying to get uranium there, USA Today reported.

WASHINGTON - Advisers to former U.S. senator and now "Law and Order" star Fred Thompson said he is planning a 2008 Republican presidential bid, Politico.com reported.
The 64-year-old is scheduled to make the announcement during the Fourth of July holiday in Nashville, and a fundraising committee will begin work next Monday, the advisers said.
However, campaign spokesman Mark Corallo said Thompson, R-Tenn., could still decide not to run or to postpone the announcement.

WASHINGTON - The growth rate of the Mexican-born population in the United States has been slowing since the middle of last year, the Pew Hispanic Center reported.
The Washington group said in 2005 and 2006, the Mexican-born population grew at about 8 percent a year but in the first quarter of 2007 the growth rate slowed to 4.2 percent.
