This Saturday, June 23, marks the opening of the fireworks sales season. Bend Fire and Rescue responds to fires each year caused by both illegal and legal fireworks. This is concerning, in that, the bulk of these incidents take place in a two to three week period. CARACAS, Venezuela - A banned Venezuelan TV channel is looking to Mexican media outlets for help getting back on the air using satellites, Internet and cable. The head of RCTV, Marcel Granier, said Wednesday he was speaking with networks in Mexico about airing some of RCTV's programming, Globovision reported. PYONGYANG, North Korea - The chief U.S. negotiator on the North Korean nuclear issue arrived in Pyongyang Thursday. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill is the highest-ranking State Department official to visit the North Korea since late 2002, Yonhap reported. CAIRO - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will convene a Middle East summit next week in Cairo. TEL AVIV, Israel - Israeli conservative opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu said Thursday that Egypt and Jordan can play key roles in weakening Hamas. ABUJA, Nigeria - The Nigerian government has warned strike leaders not to force individuals or groups to join their nationwide labor stoppage. Officials for the National Labor Congress -- a leading workers group in Nigeria -- estimated that 75 percent of the Nigerian labor force had already joined the strike, Nigeria's Vanguard newspaper reported Thursday. MANAGUA, Nicaragua - The popularity of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has dropped considerably in the last few months, according to a recent poll. The Cid-Gallup poll reported that Ortega's support base fell from 61 percent in February to 26 percent in June, The Miami Herald reported Thursday. JERUSALEM - Israeli forces have begun moving 100 Palestinians, including 30 women and 32 terror suspects, from the Gaza Strip into Egypt. The Jerusalem Post said Thursday that after the Palestinians were picked up at the Erez Crossing, they were transported on buses and sent across the border into Egypt.
