A Powell Butte man was taken into custody at his home without incident about two hours after police lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle during a car chase on Highway 126 when speeds exceeded 120 miles per hour.

A thunderstorm that passed through Central Oregon late Friday evening produced lightning that started a series of fires on the Ochoco National Forest, the Prineville District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and private lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). According to the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center, firefighters continue to work on three wildland fires started by Friday’s thunderstorms, including the Millican East fire, Fire 403 and Fire 428.

A 17-year-old Redmond girl drowned in the Deschutes River after her raft went over Cline Falls about four miles west of Redmond on Saturday, deputies reported.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies, Oregon State Police troopers, and Redmond Fire & Rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene about 8:15 p.m., July 7, Sgt. Joe DeLuca said.

NEW YORK - A year and a half before the U.S. presidential election, voters said they are overwhelmed by the campaigning, The New York Times said Monday.
In interviews around the country, the newspaper found the majority of voters asked were keen on watching who would replace the Bush administration but already weary of campaigning.

PHOENIX - Phoenix is trying to change its image as being mean to the homeless by assuring they have shelter and plenty of cold water this summer.
Last year, the National Coalition for the Homeless designated Phoenix as the 17th meanest U.S. city, out of 200, for how it treats the homeless.
"Phoenix has had a sorry history in dealing with the issue," said Jacki Taylor of the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness.

Two adults, a child and a toddler were killed, and seven others injured in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 26 about six miles east of Sandy, Oregon on Saturday morning, police reported.
Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers have identified the deceased as Lewis Delmar Lambert, 68, of Gaston; Janene M. Brundege, 44, of Portland; Brundege’s 23-month-old daughter, Abigail Kay; and Tyler Williams, 11.
