Living on Social Security is difficult.   It requires fiscal restraint.  It requires budgeting.  “It’s been tough,” said a 78-year-old Oregon man who called the senior legal helpline.  “Our sole income is Social Security, which is $890 per month.  We’ve always prided ourselves in being self-reliant.  But now the hospital bill collectors are after us.  “I told the hospital before the surgery that we could only pay $42 per month on my Medicare deductible and if ... "Spook Country" by William Gibson; Putnam; 371 pages; $26. The opening lines of William Gibson's "Neuromancer" (1984), the hyperspaced novel-rocket that launched cyberpunk, mention, not quite casually, a paper-thin fragment of rusted-out metal. For Gibson, physical objects are at best transitory - placeholders, maybe, will-o'-the-wisp suggestions that an idea once coalesced at a certain time (subjective) and place (ditto).   TIME HAS COME - William Gibson bends time and much more in 'Spook Country.' Osama bin Laden is betting that America, for all its superpower trappings, ultimately will prove to be a "weak horse." Watching Washington's internecine battle over the National Security Agency's Terrorist Surveillance Program can only encourage his disdain. No doubt, bin Laden and his lieutenants fully appreciate what too many Americans, more than a few of them in Congress, seem to have forgotten: America's defenses against the next 9/11 likely will fail without the advance knowledge ...
