It started with a sound like distant thunder, but the skies were clear. Suddenly the ground shook for miles around. A volcanic vent opened on the inside of the caldera’s rim and began sputtering lava and pumice, eventually giving way to the main lava flow. The lava slowly poured downhill igniting then burying every tree in its path.

During the week, there were 15 reports of vehicle break-ins, with an estimated value of stolen items at $5,889. Of the 15 reports, ten vehicles were unlocked. There were a total of three bicycle thefts, two unlocked, with an estimated value of $1,700. DUII arrests totaled six, and there were 25 warrant arrests made. Seven vehicles were impounded when the drivers were found to have suspended licenses, or none at all.

With a 4-2 vote, the Bend-La Pine School Board elected Janelle Wilcox to be their seventh member on Wednesday afternoon. Wilcox fills the Zone 2 seat that was vacated by Brian Gatley this spring.
“All of the candidates were excellent. It was a difficult decision but I am very pleased with the board decision to elect Janelle,” said School Board Chair Scott Reynolds.

A family dispute about money led to the arrest of a 52-year old Bend man who allegedly assaulted his father, mother and sister, sending two to the hospital, police said.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of a dispute at 21751 Los Serranos Drive in Bend about 10:45 a.m. September 7 to find an assault in progress, said Sgt. Kevin Dizney.

The Bend City Council needs a wake up call. Third Street has become a sea of signs. Street corners are crowded with walking advertisements, folks carrying huge, unsightly signs. Though there are some ordinances in place for pole signs, there are no restrictions placed upon these annoying sign-walkers. Does anyone really read these signs? One hundred flags will be flown in downtown Bend on Patriot Day, September 11 as part of the Bend Parade of Flags (BPF) program. They will be installed on Wall and Bond Streets between Greenwood and Franklin Avenues by Bend’s First Responders (Police, Fire, and Sheriff Departments) and Troop 25 of the Boy Scouts of America.
