Deputy DA nominated for traffic safety prosecutor award
by Bend Weekly News Sources

Mary Anderson, deputy district attorney for Deschutes County, received notification this week that she has been nominated as a candidate for the National Traffic Safety Award for Prosecutors.  Mary was nominated by John Moffat, regional administrator for the Pacific Northwest Region of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In the nomination letter the Regional Administrator wrote, “Ms. Anderson is viewed as a knowledgeable leader, having instructed prosecutors, law enforcement officer, and forensic scientists at the local, state and national level.”

Mary is presently the lead lawyer on the Person Crimes Team for the prosecutor’s office for Deschutes County’s District Attorney’s Office.  In this capacity, she supervises and assists other lawyers in the prosecution of the most serious cases, including vehicular homicides and serious cases of impaired driving.

Mary is also a faculty member at Indiana University’s Borkenstein Center for Studies of Law in Action in the Department of Criminal Justice.  Her instructional focus is presentation of alcohol information in the courtroom.

Dr. Barry Logan, an internationally known toxicologist and the executive director of the Borkenstein Center for Studies of Law in Action, characterized Ms. Anderson as a “dynamic and engaging instructor who is able to speak from experience, providing practical advice to scientists on testimony skills and techniques.”

Mary is currently the vice-chair of the Oregon Governors Advisory Committee on DUII.

“I am proud of Ms. Anderson’s accomplishments on a state-wide and national level,” District Attorney Michael Dugan said, “The experience and expertise she brings to Deschutes County cannot be overstated.  We are fortunate to have her as a prosecutor and trainer in our County.”
