A 19-year old Redmond resident was arrested Tuesday afternoon by Oregon State Police (OSP) and charged with 17 crimes in connection with a September 19th traffic crash into a large tree on Old Bend Redmond Highway south of Glacier View Drive that injured five people.
Richard Lawrence Lopez, 19, was arrested by OSP troopers about 4:45 p.m., November 20. Lopez is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, four counts of third-degree assault, nine counts of recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and second-degree criminal mischief. He was lodged in the Deschutes County Jail without bail.

According to troopers, Lopez was driving a Honda Civic northbound on the Old Bend Redmond Highway with six passengers about 12:45 p.m. on September 19 when the accident occurred. He allegedly took a curve at excessive speed, lost control, crossed the oncoming lane of traffic and the passenger side of the vehicle then struck a large tree at 64847 Old Bend Redmond Highway.
Lopez received only minor injuries. Right front seat passenger Dustin Duffy, 18, from Redmond, was seriously injured. Natasha R. Schuler, an 18-year-old Redmond resident, was seated on Duffy’s lap and received a head injury.
The left rear seat position was filled by Christopher Moe, 22, and 15-year-old Sheridan Wilder was seated on Moe’s lap. Moe, from Redmond, and Wilder, from Bend, received minor injuries.
Desiray Mercado, 20, from Redmond was seated in the middle rear position, and 19-year old Brian Duran of Redmond was seated to her right. Both received minor injuries.
