LA PINE, Ore. – Deputies are continuing an investigation into the discovery of an un-detonated pipe bomb found on a La Pine resident’s property Tuesday afternoon.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s Sgt. Vance Lawrence said deputies were called to an area near 52727 Rainbow Drive in La Pine about 3:30 p.m., May 20.
The Oregon State Police Bomb Disposal Unit was called in and rendered the bomb, described as a home-made device made from PVC pipe and other materials including gun powder and small metal items, safe.
“Whoever made this device did attempt to detonate it, but the detonation failed,” Lawrence said, adding that the bomb was apparently designed to cause injury to any persons in close proximity.
“Anyone who finds any device they believe may contain explosives or hazardous materials should not disturb the device or allow anyone to get near it,” the sergeant said. Instead, call 911 and report it so that public safety officials can respond to the scene as soon as possible, he said.
