Foot tracks in snow lead to attempted burglary arrest
by Bend Weekly News Sources

LA PINE, Ore. – Foot tracks in the snow leading away from a La Pine home where the resident reported hearing some noises and a window breaking led deputies on a miles-long search early Sunday morning before a police dog located the suspect and he was placed under arrest, deputies reported.

According to Deschutes County Sheriff’s Sgt. Vance Lawrence, deputies responded to a reported burglary in progress at a home on Liberty Road about 1:45 a.m., Sunday. Deputies began following tracks in the snow which led away from the house, and soon called in Bend Police Officer E. Supplee and his dog, Zlatan, to assist.

After several miles, Zlatan located the suspect, Lucas Ayers, 21, of Gilchrist. Ayers was bitten by the police dog after he failed to comply with police orders, Lawrence said.

Ayers was taken into custody, treated for his injuries, then was lodged in the Deschutes County Jail in lieu of $17,500 bail. He is charged with first-degree criminal mischief, attempted burglary and attempted criminal trespass.

“It appears that entry into the house was not made,” Sgt. Lawrence said.
