Prineville woman held in alleged kidnapping attempt
by Richard Burton

A Prineville woman arrested for drunk driving will also face charges related to the attempted kidnapping of her grandson, deputies said.  Sharon Johnson, 54, allegedly made two attempts on Tuesday to take her 23-month-old grandchild without permission from a home about ten miles south of Prineville, once fighting with the child’s caregiver and then returning armed with a pistol.

Johnson’s first attempt ended in a physical fight with the child’s caregiver after she entered the home without permission, said Det. Sgt. Travis Jurgens with the Crook County Sheriff’s Office.  On her second attempt she allegedly returned armed with a pistol and beat on the door, attempting to kick it down when she heard the caregiver calling the police, then fleeing.

Deputies were called to a residence on SE Gatling Way Tuesday afternoon about 2:30 p.m. for a reported burglary in progress, Jurgens said.  Before police arrived on scene, however, they learned the suspect had fled in a green Ford Explorer.  Responding deputies located the SUV about three miles away on SE Davis Loop and conducted a traffic stop, arresting Johnson for driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Additional charges include first-degree attempted burglary, two counts of reckless endangerment, first-degree attempted kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and two counts of menacing and unlawful use of a weapon.  Johnson is being held in the Crook County Jail on $105,000 bail.
