Prineville man arrested in skateboard shop burglary
by Cheryl McDermott

Two hours after the theft of a unique skateboard, baseball cap, and skating shoes from the Shred Shed, a Prineville skateboard shop, Jody Steven Zech arrived at the Prineville Police Department to turn himself in for an unrelated outstanding warrant.

Zech was carrying a one-of-a-kind skateboard bearing the Shred Shed logo, and was wearing distinctive skating shoes and a baseball cap.  He also had a cut on one hand.

Unfortunately for Zech, 35, the officer assigned to take him into custody was the same officer who investigated the burglary at the Shred Shed  -- an officer who knew the skateboard, baseball cap, and skating shoes were among several items reported stolen.  An officer who knew that a small amount of blood was found at the scene, presumably left when the burglar cut himself.

The Shred Shed burglary at 172 NW Fourth Street was reported about 5:40 a.m., February 14, Chief Eric Bush said, and Zech arrived at the police department at 7:40 a.m. to surrender himself for an outstanding misdemeanor disorderly charge from Crook County.

Zech was questioned about the burglary, and the investigation led to the recovery of numerous other Shred Shed items at his apartment at 940 NW Second Street, Bush said.

The suspect was lodged in the Crook County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.  Zech is charged with second-degree burglary; first-degree theft; first-degree criminal mischief; and receiving, possessing, and concealing stolen property.

  • Oh Jody, what have you come to? Still stealing after all these years. I wish you would get your life together finally and stop being stupid. I will always love the boy who could have been.
