Two Prineville teenagers were taken into custody Saturday following an investigation of criminal mischief near Wildcat Campground in the Ochoco National Forest, accused of shooting a number of signs and causing $800 in damage, Crook County Sheriff’s deputies reported.

A traffic warning sign was placed on the road near the campground Saturday, March 31, where County search and rescue personnel had assembled for a training exercise, Detective Sgt. Travis Jurgens said.  Hours later, a vehicle pulled up and the driver, later identified as Jace Patrick Lewis, 18, allegedly shot at the sign.

Jurgens said that during the investigation, deputies found that Lewis and his 17-year-old male juvenile passenger allegedly shot several other signs in the area, causing an estimated $800 in damage.

Lewis and the 17-year-old boy are both accused of second-degree criminal mischief, Jurgens said.  Lewis is also charged with reckless endangering, and was lodged in the Crook County Jail.  The juvenile was cited and released to his parent.
