CRR man arrested in dog poisonings
by Bend Weekly News Sources

Following a months long investigation, a 68-year old Crooked River Ranch man was arrested yesterday morning by Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies and has been charged with two counts of first-degree animal abuse in connection with poisonings and attempted poisoning of dogs in his neighborhood.

According to Undersheriff Jim Adkins, a neighbor of Alan Roy Whitacre caught the suspect “in the act” using a hidden video camera.  A search warrant was obtained and executed on Wednesday so deputies could attempt to locate and recover the poison allegedly used by the suspect.

Sheriff Jack Jones said Alan Roy Whitacre was taken into custody at 7:35 a.m. Thursday.

“The suspect attempted to poison two dogs, which we can prove,” said Adkins.  A dog and a cat in the neighborhood died several weeks ago, and although deputies suspect they also were poisoned, Whitacre is not charged in those cases.

“The arrest comes after several months of investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Redmond Humane Society,” Sheriff Jones said.

“We don’t believe Whitacre is involved in the reported shooting deaths of other animals in the Crooked River Ranch area,” Undersheriff Adkins said.  “We didn’t retrieve the correct weapon from his house during the search warrant, and his MO (method of operation) doesn’t match the shootings.”

The investigation into the shooting deaths are continuing, and Adkins said there is still a reward being offered for information in those cases.
