Redmond man injured in 200-foot tumble
by Cheryl McDermott

A 26-year old Redmond man was transported to the hospital by helicopter after he was rescued from the bottom of a steep 200-foot embankment leading down to the Clackamas River east of Estacada on Monday evening, deputies reported.

Danny Russell Crane was negotiating the side of a steep bank near milepost 24 of Highway 224 with a friend in order to get down to the Clackamas River below when the earth collapsed beneath their feet about 6 p.m., Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies said.  Crane tumbled out of control until he came to rest about 200 feet below, injured but conscious and breathing.

High-angle rope technicians with Clackamas Fire & Rescue retrieved Crane and provided emergency medical attention before he was flown by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital.  According to deputies, Crane complained of neck, shoulder, and abdominal pain.

By chance, Crane’s friend was taken into custody when he was found to have an outstanding warrant for theft issued by the Salem Police Department.  Nicholas James Earl Harris, 20, was lodged in the Clackamas County Jail.
