Search and rescue team members from Deschutes County responded to two unrelated calls for help from hikers, one injured and one ill, on Tuesday, authorities reported.
According to a news release issued by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, the first call came in about 4:20 p.m., July 31, summoning help to the Lava River Caves.
Edyta Lukasik, 19, of Ontario, Oregon, suffered from minor injuries he received while hiking with a group from Treasure Valley Community College. Sunriver Fire paramedics assisted, and Lukasik was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Lt. Myrna Homan said.
Within minutes of the first call, the search and rescue (SAR) team was called to assist a Chicago-area man who became ill while hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail north of Belknap Crater. Rescue teams responded, both by horseback and via ground crews, Homan said.
37-year old Eric Young was located and brought back to the Sisters area where he was treated by medics. Young didn’t require transport to the hospital.
