Sheepdog Safely Recovered by Bend Police
by Bend Weekly News Sources

A community effort between the media, a private citizen, the Humane Society of Central Oregon and the Bend Police helped recover the Old English Sheepdog that was stolen about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 8.  “Kaz” was returned to the shelter by Bend Police Wednesday afternoon.

The Humane Society of Central Oregon received a tip from an anonymous caller Wednesday afternoon regarding the missing female Old English Sheepdog.  City of Bend Police Officer Crea Lancaster and Officer Jason Gault investigated and successfully retrieved the dog about 5 p.m. November 15.

A microchip identification implanted in the dog provided positive proof that it was the missing dog.

"The dog was quickly and safely returned to the Humane Society because of an alert and compassionate community, “ said Troy Kerstetter, animal welfare director.  “The dog appears to be in good condition, and we're looking forward to placing it into a responsible and loving home."

Kerstetter extended words of appreciation to “thank all of the people who called the shelter to report sightings” of Kaz.

“This case exemplifies the value of a microchip identification implant,” Kerstetter said.  “A microchip along with an ID tag ensures your dog will be quickly returned to you.  Like Kaz, the Old English Sheepdog, purebred dogs look very similar and a microchip is a quick way to positively identify your dog,” he added.
