BEND, Ore. – A Pendleton woman was rescued by paramedics and Search and Rescue members when she was injured during a field trip with elementary school children while exploring Lava River Caves east of Sunriver, Oregon, Friday morning, deputies reported.
42-year old Sue M. Caldwell of Pendleton was about ½ mile inside the cave when the non-life threatening injury which left her unable to walk occurred about 10 a.m., May 30, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Cpl. Wayne Morgan stated in a news release.
Half a dozen Sunriver Fire paramedics and firefighters entered the cave, provided medical assistance, prepared Caldwell for transport and began evacuating her before they were met by several Deschutes County Search and Rescue members equipped with a wheeled litter.
The injured woman was transported out of the cave, transferred to a Sunriver Fire Department ambulance by about 12:40 p.m., then taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, the corporal said.
