One killed in Bend manufactured home fire
by Cheryl McDermott

One person was killed Wednesday afternoon in a fire that burned a double-wide manufactured home in the Deschutes River Woods subdivision in south Bend, said authorities.

Bend Fire personnel and Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies rushed to 19436 Baker Road about 4 p.m. in response to several 9-1-1 calls reporting a structure fire at that location, said Lt. Erik Utter.

Flames were visible inside the single-story manufactured home, and “a large amount” of smoke was pouring out when fire personnel entered the home to extinguish the blaze, the lieutenant said.

Once the fire was out, a search of the residence was conducted and the body of a deceased person was found.   The victim has not yet been identified, said Lt. Utter, declining to make further details available due to the ongoing investigation.

Three fire engines, one water tender, a rescue truck, command vehicle, and one ambulance were dispatched to the scene, Deputy Fire Marshal Susie Lovisco said.  She estimated $20,000 in damage to the double-wide, and $5,000 loss to contents.

According to Deschutes County property records available online through DIAL, the Baker Road property is owned by Lee A. Cornelius.
