Mother injured, baby OK in Highway 20 crash
by Cheryl McDermott

A 23-year old Sisters woman received minor injuries in a collision that occurred Tuesday morning on Highway 20 at Tumalo when a van pulled out in front of her vehicle.  Her two-week old daughter and the other driver were unharmed. Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies reported.

Deputies, Bend Fire emergency medical technicians, and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) personnel were dispatched to the scene of the accident at the intersection of Highway 20 West and Cook Avenue after a report was called in by a motorist using a cell phone, said Sgt. Vance Lawrence.

Investigation by deputies determined that Sara Hudson Connor and her infant daughter were traveling west on Highway 20 in a 1992 Ford Explorer when the accident occurred.  They were approaching Cook Avenue when their vehicle was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet Van that had just entered the intersection after being stopped at a stop sign.  The driver of the van, identified as William Riggs, 64, of Bend, was not injured in the crash, Sgt. Lawrence said.  Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage and were towed from the scene.

Connor was transported by ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, and was reportedly treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.  The infant had been in a safety-seat and was not hurt, the sergeant said.

When deputies arrived, Highway 20 was partially blocked and eastbound traffic was slowed significantly for about two hours while ODOT rerouted westbound traffic to Cook Avenue.

The investigation is still in progress, said Sgt. Lawrence.
