Car without headlights on could have contributed to the crash.
At approximately 9:30 P.M. on Tuesday, June 6th, Oregon State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 26 at the intersection of Fir Lane, which is five miles west of Madras. A black Mitsubishi 3000GT driven by Edward Winishut, a 21 year old from Warm Springs, was westbound on Highway 26 when an oncoming Buick 4-door attempted to turn left onto Fir Lane. The two vehicles impacted head on in the intersection.
Mr. Winishut, the lone occupant in the Mitsubishi was deceased at the scene. The driver of the Buick, Ronald Maitland, a 66 year old from Madras, and his passenger Rita Maitland, age 85 from Hawaii, were transported to Saint Charles Hospital in Bend. Mrs. Maitland (the mother of Ronald) is in critical condition. Mr. Maitland was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Witness statements indicate that Mr. Winishut was operating his vehicle with his headlights off. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol are involved. The State Police received assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Madras Police Department, and Oregon Department of Transportation. One lane of traffic was maintained until the highway completely re-opened at 1 A.M.
