Bend bridge, walkway renamed to honor local veterans
by Bend Weekly News Sources

Newport Avenue Bridge becomes “Veterans Memorial Bridge”; adjacent walkway named "Randy Newman Walkway" after Lance Cpl. Randy Newman

In Wednesday’s meeting of the Bend City Council, members agreed to rename Newport Avenue Bridge “Veterans Memorial Bridge”, and to pay special tribute to a local Marine killed in Iraq by naming an adjacent walkway “Randy Newman Walkway”.  Lance Cpl. Newman, a Bend native, lost his life on August 20 of last year.

Councilors Chris Telfer and Bill Friedman brought forward the proposal to honor Bend’s native veterans, and members agreed this would be an appropriate way to memorialize the men and women who lost their lives in all conflicts – past and present – in which the US armed forces were engaged.

Council requested that Dick Tobiason, a representative of a Veterans’ group, meet with ‘Arts in Public Places’ and the Arts, Culture and Beautification Committee to discuss potential ways to honor both Bend pioneers and veterans in Brandis Square.  Although no decision was announced, the idea of placing paving stones inscribed with fallen Bend veterans along the Randy Newman Walkway was also discussed.
