Pond skimming championship to mark end of Mt. Bachelor ski season
by Bend Weekly News Sources

LibertyBank North American Pond Skimming Championships will be held on Closing Day, Sunday, May 20

Mt. Bachelor has announced that Sunday, May 20th will be the final day for skiing and riding for the 2006-2007 season.  With two weeks remaining, there is plenty of snow and fun filled events to wrap up the season.

To honor mothers this season, Mt. Bachelor will offer a special for the first time on Mother’s Day.  On ”Bring Your Mama or Any Mama Day”, guests who bring their own mom or someone else’s mom will receive a free ticket of equal or lesser value when one full-price ticket is purchased.  This is a light-hearted event -- costumes are welcome. The first 100 “moms” will also receive a flower.

Closing weekend will be filled with year-end events and festivities that include the U.S. Bank Pole, Pedal, Paddle on Saturday, May 19 and the LibertyBank North American Pond Skimming Championships on Sunday, May 20.

The sixth annual LibertyBank North American Pond Skimming Championships will be hosted on closing day, May 20.   During this entertaining event, skiers and snowboarders attempt to cross an 80-foot icy pond.  Participants are judged on their ability to cross the pond, costume and overall style.  All participants are also entered to win a Mt. Bachelor Full Season Pass for the 2007-08 Season.  Live music, barbecue and kayak demos add to the fun and welcome the transition from winter to summer. The top three finishers take home “Summer Prize Packs” supplied by local sponsors.   The event starts at 10 A.M. on the slopes in front of the West Village Lodge.  Registration is open now through the day of the event.  The cost is $25 and participants must be at least nine-years-old.

“This is it,” states Carly Carmichael, Director of Marketing for Mt. Bachelor.  With over 80 inches of snow still at the base, it’s time to come up and get in your last turns before summer is officially here.”

Currently, Mt Bachelor is open for Summit Season.  Hours of operations are from 8 A.M. to 1 P.M. The Pine Marten Express lift operates daily and the Summit Express lift runs daily weather permitting.  Thanks to recent snowfall, the mountain has 86 inches of snow at the base and 118 inches at mid-mountain.
