Redmond Pedestrian Killed in Hwy 20 Traffic Accident
by Cheryl McDermott

A Redmond woman was struck and killed in a traffic accident Monday night while walking on Highway 20 about 5 miles north of Bend, Oregon on Gerking Market Road.

According to Lt. Deron McMaster of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and fire personnel from the Bend Fire Department were called to the scene about 10:20 pm Monday, July 24th.  They found the victim, later identified as 33 year old Kimberly Jossart of Redmond, deceased at the scene.

McMaster said that a 2003 Acura 2-door car driven by Casey A. Haneberg, a 24 year old Beaverton Oregon resident, was eastbound on Highway 20W approaching the intersection with Gerking Market Road. The driver, according to McMaster, said that he saw Jossart walking in the highway and unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the collision by swerving to the left.  After the impact, the Acura crossed both westbound travel lanes and left the road where it came to rest.

Haneberg was uninjured and his passenger, Caitlyn Quwenikov, also of Beaverton, had very minor cuts and scrapes.

Oregon State Police and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted the sheriff’s office in the investigation, with ODOT rerouting traffic around the accident scene for three to four hours during the scene investigation.

Deputies are continuing their investigation to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the accident.

  • This accident was ruled by crime analyists as a suicide by automobile. The pedestrian involved in the crash was walking directly down the center of Hwy 20, and ended her life by intently stepping directly infront of the moving vehicle. The driver of the car did in fact swerve in attempt to miss the pedestrian, but after impact the car was facing oncoming traffic; a minivan carrying a family of four. The driver then swerved again further to the left to avoid a horrific head-on collision which launched the car about 500 ft. though desert and brush, coming to a skidding stop just feet before the drop of a 30 ft. revene. There were several witnesses to this accident as well who were unfortunate enough to watch the entire scene unfold. Alcohol was never ruled a factor by either the investigating officers on-scene or by any other authority involved in the incident. I am deeply saddened by the loss of this poor woman, but the real victims in this case would in fact be the newly engaged young couple who were driving the car that she chose to use as a weapon to end her life. Thank you Richard Burton for the wonderful work you do with your newspaper.
