City Receives Over $4 Million in Grants for Transit System and Airport
by Bend Weekly News Sources

The City of Bend announced today it will receive a total of $4,350,000 in grant funding, $4 million of which will be used to build a public transit operations and maintenance center for its new transit system which is scheduled to begin running in late September. The funds originate from ConnectOregon grants earmarked for transportation projects within Central Oregon.

“We are pleased the City of Bend has received the grant funding from the State of Oregon. By pooling our resources with city and state funding, the City of Bend will be able to build a first-class transit operations and maintenance facility for its new Bend Area Transit fleet,” Assistant Public Works Director Brad Emerson said.

The City also received $350,000 funding for the Bend Airport’s runway relocation project. Bend’s Airport Manager, Greg Phillips said construction is expected to begin by mid-August.

Around the state, communities and companies will use ConnectOregon grants to upgrade airports, rail freight yards, rapid transit systems, air freight centers, and other non-highway transportation facilities. ConnectOregon is a $100-million program backed by lottery bonds to improve transportation networks in Oregon. ConnectOregon focuses on improving the connections between the highway system and the other modes of transportation to improve flow of commerce and eliminate delays.
