A motorcyclist who struck a deer was killed on Cascade Lakes Highway near Wickiup Reservoir, Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies reported.
The crash involving a 62 year old man whose name has not yet been released occurred on Wednesday, August 9 shortly before 10 a.m. near milepost 56.
According to Lt. Erik Utter of the Sheriff's office, deputies arrived at the scene to find the rider of a 1995 Harley Davidson motorcycle lying on the east shoulder of the highway. Preliminary investigation suggests the rider was traveling north on the highway and hit an adult deer in the middle of the northbound lane of traffic. Skid marks indicate the victim unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the collision, lost control and was thrown from the motorcycle. The deer was also killed.
Medics with the La Pine Fire department responded to render aid, but the victim did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no apparent witnesses to the incident, said Lt. Utter, but motorists came upon the scene shortly after the accident occurred and called 9-1-1.
Based on the investigation the rider’s speed does appear to be a factor in the crash, although it is not believed that alcohol was involved.
