Name of Victim From Fatal Motorcycle Crash Released
by Cheryl McDermott

The motorcyclist who lost his life in an accident involving a deer on Cascade Lakes Highway August 9th has been identified as Friedhelm Andresen of Negernbotel, Germany.  According to a news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Andresen’s family was notified with the assistance of the German Consulate.

Andresen struck a deer and was killed on Cascade Lakes Highway near Wickiup Reservoir, milepost 56, just before 10 a.m. August 9.

According to Lt. Erik Utter of the Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the scene to find the rider of a 1995 Harley Davidson motorcycle lying on the east shoulder of the highway.  Preliminary investigation suggested Andresen  was traveling north on the highway and hit an adult deer in the middle of the northbound lane of traffic. Skid marks indicated the victim unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the collision, lost control and was thrown from the motorcycle.  The deer was also killed.

Medics with the La Pine Fire department responded to render aid, but Andresen did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no apparent witnesses to the incident, said Lt. Utter, but motorists came upon the scene shortly after the accident occurred and called 9-1-1.

Based on the investigation the rider’s speed appears to be a factor in the crash, although it is not believed that alcohol was involved.

  • (Originally posted on The Motorcycle Tourer's Forum 8/11 by nextmoran) It was on hwy 46 somewhere south of Lava Lake (our last stop prior to the encounter), probably around Crane Prairie Lake. We rounded a wide sweeping bend going south...having great fun on the road...and we saw a half dozen cars in the oncoming lane stopped somewhat haphazardly across the highway, so we slowed down. As we got closer saw a dead deer on the right side. As I prepared to stop, a citizen flagged us down. She said a biker struck a deer, and went down. I asked if he was OK, and she said he was definitly gone. She said emergency services was on the way. I slowly drove past, and saw what looked like a Harley softail on it's side and, the body very close by. Didn't think we could help further, so we went on our way. My riding buddy (behind me), an Army Vet, said he took a closer look to ensure there wasn't anything he could do (CPR, etc) and, I won't go into details about what he saw, but there was no hope for the guy. The curious thing is, the deer, the bike, and the body were all directly across the road from each other. You would think in an accident like this, something would end up many yards up or down the road. I doubt anything was moved as we saw it. We didn't think to look for skid marks, but don't remember any. At any rate, it was a very sobering experience for us. We had only seen one deer earlier that morning about 40 miles back, and this unfortunate soul must have had one jump right in front of him. We would like to know who he was...(the people there didn't know yet), and maybe pass on our best wishes to his next of kin.

  • Hello, I am Katrin Andresen from Germany. I am the daughter of the mentioned motorcyclist. My family and I obtained only very few information on the accident up to the present date. We are very thankful if there are witnesses of the accident who can tell something to us. Or perhaps there is somebody who talked to him shortly before. Please contact us. Many thanks!
