Redmond High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrest of Terrebonne Man
by Richard Burton

A Terrebonne man was arrested Wednesday after fleeing the scene of a traffic stop in Redmond and leading officers on a chase at speeds of up to 90 mph, Oregon State Police reported.

An Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper assisted by a Deschutes County Sheriff's Deputy had stopped two cars at 3:40 a.m. August 23 on East Antler near Southeast 9th Street in Redmond.  Both vehicles had been seen coming from a closed section of Bureau of Land Management property.

Sheriff’s Deputy Stacey Crawford and his drug dog were conducting a search of one of the stopped vehicles, when the second driver identified as Robert James Hawley, 20, of Terrebonne, fled in a Datsun 210.

OSP Senior Trooper Jason Hansen followed Hawley as he drove onto Highway 97 and several other local streets, reaching speeds near 90 mph on Highway 97 and slowing down on rural roads.

Hawley eventually stopped on West Antler and 19th in Redmond and was taken into custody without incident.

He was lodged in the Deschutes County Jail on a felony charge of attempting to elude and reckless driving. He was also cited for driving with a suspended license and without insurance, and his vehicle was impounded.  According to Trooper Hansen, Hawley said he fled the scene because he became nervous.
