11th Annual Exotic Car Show Revs up Weekend Fun
by K Guice

Porsches, Jaguars and Ferraris… oh my! Those are just a few of the exotic cars auto enthusiasts are sure to see at the 11th Annual Sunriver Exotic Car Show that runs Friday, September 15 through Sunday, September 17.

The event offers about 100 different types of cool cars in a more casual car show setting.  “It’s not a very competitive event, so all of the participants look forward to it”, said John Draneas, the Sunriver Exotic Car Show organizer.

The event is open to all auto clubs and the general public, so Draneas says there is a blend of cars from all drives of life.  “This is sort of a multicultural car event,” he laughs.

It was not always that way.  For the first two years, the event was specifically for Porsches.  “The Porches club… had weather problems both years and it just didn’t go very well so it sort of got dropped,” he said.

However, Draneas and a friend, Jay Audia, thought it was far too fun to just give up on, so they revived it.

“Instead of just Porsches we invited all of the public,” he said.  “If you have an interesting car you can bring it.”

You will also need $75 per person to attend the three-day, fun-filled show.

On Friday, participants will meet up for breakfast at Gran Prix Imports.  From there the group will caravan over the mountains, to lunch at Zydeco Kitchen in Bend.

The cars get a little special treatment in preparation for Saturday’s big show.  There will be a free car wash at Carrera Motors in Bend.

On Saturday morning, auto owners will rise and get their cars ready to shine at the Sunriver Village Courtyard, where everyone is invited to come down and take in the sites.

At 10 a.m. judging gets underway.  However, Draneas says it is not the usual competitions.  In fact, each year he is never sure how judges will vote or what people will win.

“They get made up on the spot,” he joked.  “For example, one year we had an all-female panel of judges.  They gave a prize for the car they would most like to get in a divorce settlement,” he laughed.

Later that afternoon, participants will take in a wine and cheese party and later meet for cocktails and dinner at the Sunriver Resort Pine Path Room.

The event winds down with the famous Sunriver Sunday Dash that will start in the Sunriver Village Courtyard at 10 a.m.

Participants will take a scenic drive around the area and wrap things up with a meal before hitting the road to go back home.

Draneas said ultimately, “It’s just really a fun thing.”
