Two members of a hunting party, both Bend residents, were accidentally shot by a third hunter who was unloading a firearm in their nearby travel trailer on Sunday afternoon, deputies reported.
Jeffry Woods, 24, and Gail Woods, 52, were injured by a bullet fragments from a shot through the trailer’s door frame, Crook County Detective Sgt. Travis Jurgens said.
About 2:30 p.m. deputies and Fire & Rescue personnel responded to the Johnson Creek Road area. “Both gunshot victims were reported to be in good condition by medical staff,” Jurgens said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Mona Woods of Veneta was unloading the firearm when it discharged.
No charges have yet been filed, Jurgens said, but added that the case will be referred to the Crook County District Attorney’s office for consideration.
Detective Sgt. Jurgens offered the following important gun safety tips:
1) Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
2) Keep your trigger finger outside of the trigger guard and along side the frame until you are on target and have made the decision to shoot.
3) Make sure of your target and what lies beyond.
4) Set up a safety zone around your camp. When entering the safety zone everyone should turn and face away from the camp and safely unload their firearm.
