According to Andrea McCulloug, the Communications Manager for the City of Bend, two stop signs on the east and west legs of the intersection of NW 5th and Portland Avenue will be removed. The change will be effective Friday, March 31. (Advance warning signs were put in place March 23rd to alert drivers to the traffic change.)
The stop sign removal is part of the City’s plan to detour traffic from the Newport Avenue corridor. Newport Avenue will be closed between Brooks & Drake Road beginning the week of April 10th. (The existing Newport Bridge will be demolished).
Other changes to the Portland Avenue and Galveston Avenue corridors include: (1) removing parking, and striping bike lanes on Portland Avenue to encourage bicycle travel; (2) restricting left turn lanes at the intersection of Galveston and Harmon to keep east-west traffic flowing efficiently; (3) striping 3-lanes on Galveston to prevent left turns from delaying traffic flow and (4) adding or replacing pedestrian ramps at intersections on Galveston & Portland.
All changes are expected to be in place until the new Newport Avenue Bridge opens in the fall of 2006. Stop sign changes will be carefully monitored for safety, especially during the first weeks of the traffic detour.
