Farrakhan ordered to appear in Ind. court
by UPI

HAMMOND, Ind. -- A Hammond, Ind., federal court has ordered Minister Louis Farrakhan to appear and explain why stipends given to his son are not considered income.

The Chicago-based Nation of Islam spiritual leader's son, Nasir Farrakhan, claimed he could not pay $350,000 in punitive damages to a Gary, Ind., couple after crashing into their car and leaving the scene in 2003 because he has no income and has never been employed, the Northwest Indiana Times reported Wednesday.

However, Louis Farrakhan pays a $1,400 cash stipend to his son every week. Nasir Farrakhan claims the payments are legally considered "charity," despite his years-long position at the head of his father's 20-man security force.

Attorneys for Charles and Gladys Peterson, the couple hit by Nasir Farrakhan, claim the money paid to Nasir Farrakhan by his father and the Nation of Islam constitutes income that can be garnished.

"We will continue to pursue this through every avenue possible to ensure the Petersons are paid every penny they are owed," attorney Michael Back said.
