CAMDEN, N.J. - New Jersey State Police divers have halted their search for the body of a young mother allegedly killed and dumped in a creek.
Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, said troopers would check the banks of Pennsauken Creek regularly to determine if the body of Felicia Mikels has come to the surface, the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill reported.
Douglas Mandichak of Maple Shade has been charged with killing Mikels, 17. Her uncle, Christopher Mikels of Maple Shade -- who told police he might be the father of Felicia Mikels' 5-week-old daughter -- is also charged.
The young men reportedly discussed killing the baby but dumped her in Cherry Hill instead, wrapped in a blanket and strapped in a car seat.
The Rev. James Leamon, said Wednesday that the Maple Shade Congregational Church has decided against setting up a defense fund for Mandichak. Instead, church members will be encouraged to give directly to the family.
Mandichak attended the church as a child and his grandmother has been a member since she was a child, Leamon said. He said church officials were surprised by the number of angry telephone calls and e-mails they received about the possible defense fund.
