BOSWELL, Ind. - An Indiana rail crossing where a driver was killed in a chain reaction crash involving a train and six vehicles has been the site of five crashes since 1984.
Two of the earlier crashes involved fatalities.
Monday's chain reaction began when a tractor-trailer hit the 22nd car of a freight train in Boswell, a rural area 30 miles west of Lafayette, the Lafayette Journal & Courier reported. Heavy fog had reduced visibility in the area.
The dead man was driving a pick-up truck that was pushed by a car into the tractor-trailer. The driver and a passenger in the tractor-trailer were critically injured, while other drivers involved in the pileup escaped with minor or no injuries.
Six cars of the train derailed. Three turned on their sides, spilling loads of corn.
U.S. 41 was closed for several hours.
The earlier fatalities at the crossing involved truck drivers bypassing the lowered barriers.
