RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine Sunday declared a state of emergency and authorized activation of the National Guard as wind whipped fires in the commonwealth.
Authorities urged Virginians not to burn anything out of doors and Kaine directed state agencies to aid in the response to wildfires across the commonwealth, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported.
The National Weather Service posted a wind advisory at noon Sunday for southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina, as gusts swept through the region. The advisory was to have expired at 6 p.m. but was extended for two hours, the newspaper said.
Officials said fires had destroyed an undetermined number of homes and apartment buildings and burned acres of brush.
