Virginia firefighters busy fighting blazes
by UPI

SUFFOLK, Va. - Suffolk, Va., firefighters kept busy over the weekend, combating a series of wildfires brought on by gusting winds.

Although Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine declared a state of emergency because of statewide fires, it was the Suffolk firefighters that kept the busiest in Hampton Roads, working fires at Tidewater Community College, The Daily Press newspaper in Newport News, Va., reported Monday.

Fire Capt. Jim Judkins said the fire department was able to contain the fires with no major damage to homes in the area, though firefighters stayed overnight to monitor the situation.

Judkins told The Daily Press that one citizen, whose name was not released, was charged with having a non-permissible open burn and careless damaging of property. He said that person could face a $2,500 fine and a year in prison if convicted.
