Shadegg decides not to seek re-election
by UPI

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., will not run for an eighth term in Congress, it was reported Tuesday.

The congressman said Monday that neither health concerns nor fears that he could lose his seat in November were factors in deciding not to run.

He recently said he could handily win another term in the House, representing the state's solidly Republican 3rd Congressional District. He had raised nearly $500,000 for re-election in the fourth quarter, The Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.

"I've been thinking about this for a number of months, though I've held it close to my vest," Shadegg told the newspaper. "I've just reached the conclusion I'd like to do something else with my life other than be in the minority in the U.S. House of Representatives."

Shadegg was first elected to the House in 1995, when Republicans led Congress. He previously has expressed interest in running for the Senate if either fellow Republicans Sens. John McCain or Jon Kyla retired.

Bob Lord, the top Democratic challenger seeking Shadegg's seat has raised more than $500,000.

"I was looking forward to discussing his record in this campaign, but more important than that is change in Washington," said Lord, a Phoenix attorney. "If his retirement makes that easier, then it is a good thing."
