JACUMBA, Calif. -- A California man freed himself after being trapped in his car for 12 hours after slipping into a gully in the median of a highway near the Mexican border.
Jose Antonio Perez Carmona's car could not be seen from Interstate 8, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. He finally escaped Monday afternoon and climbed up the bank to the roadway, where he was spotted by Border Patrol agents.
Perez Carmona, of San Ysidro, said he swerved when a coyote ran in front of his 1991 Honda Accord.
He was taken by helicopter to a hospital in San Diego, the California Highway Patrol reported.
