INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis couple were detained briefly Tuesday after disrupting a hearing for the man suspected of killing their 8-year-old daughter.
Christopher and Laura Hitchings were handcuffed, The Indianapolis Star reported. They were released a short time later, and courtroom deputies said they never planned to arrest them.
The uproar began when Hitchings lunged toward Emmanuel McLendon Jr.
"You killed my baby," he shouted.
Karissa Hitchings was hit by a bullet as she watched television Friday night in the family living room. Investigators said bullets were fired into the living room from outside.
McLendon has not been formally charged.
Kerry Forrestal, the chief deputy, said Hitchings apologized to court workers.
"It's very understandable with the intense drama that has occurred in their life," Forestal said. "Neither deputy said that at any time did they intend to make an arrest."
McLendon's sister, Nikita Allen, was arrested after she allegedly refused to follow deputies' directions.
