WICHITA, Kan. - Tenants who had heard rumors about a body buried in a house in their Wichita, Kan., neighborhood found it in their own basement.
The body was identified Thursday as Jennie Heltsley, who had been reported missing in December, WIBW, Wichita, reported. The man who rented the house at the time was charged with killing her.
Chilo Hernandez, 26, the suspect, was already in jail facing drug charges. Police said that Heltsley, who had been struggling with drug addiction, may have bought drugs from him.
Investigators had not yet determined how Heltsley died.
Kevin Inkelaar, who married Heltsley last May, said he feared she was dead after she vanished in December.
"Drugs and money, it's just not worth taking somebody's life," Inkelaar said.
Rumors about a body buried somewhere in the neighborhood had been persistent enough that police had searched several houses without result. The rumors also convinced the house's tenants to dig in the basement. Heltsley's body had been placed in a depression in the floor that once held a stove and then covered with a layer of concrete.
