8 wounded in LA bus stop shooting
by UPI

LOS ANGELES -- Eight people were wounded -- two critically -- when a gunman opened fire on a crowd at a Los Angeles bus stop, authorities said.

Five of the victims were under the age of 15, the Los Angeles Times reported. The two in critical condition were a 12-year-old girl and a 49-year-old woman. They were expected to live.

City police Cmdr. Andy Smith said the shooter apparently got off a bus, argued with someone on the street and then began firing, the Times said.

"It appears he was shooting indiscriminately into the crowd at the bus stop. It was a busy area and it is not clear who he was shooting at, but he hit these poor souls at the bus stop," Smith said.

The gunman -- described as a black man in his early 20s, about 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, with braided hair and wearing a white T-shirt -- remained at large.
