STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Prominent financier and former math professor James H. Simons is giving $60 million to Stony Brook University on Long Island, N.Y,.
It is the largest gift in Stony Brook's history and the largest gift given to any of the schools in the State University of New York system, the university said Tuesday in a news release. Simons served as chairman of Stony Brook University's Mathematics Department from 1968 to 1976.
Forbes magazine ranked Simons as the 214th wealthiest person in the world last year, The New York Times reported.
The money, donated through the Simons Foundation, will be used to construct and endow the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics on the main campus. The university said the money also will be used to "recruit and retain the highest quality faculty, provide enhanced training and support for graduate students, support research programs, secure visiting scholars," and sponsor workshops and conferences.
The university said the gift will bring to almost $100 million the amount Simons and his wife Marilyn have given to the university
