NEW YORK - Police in New York City are anxious to find the man who left a 6-month-old baby in the back of a cab with a bag of food and clothes.
Driver Klever Sailema told police that the man flagged him down Thursday morning in Queens and rode with the baby for several blocks before saying he had to make a call from a pay phone, the New York Daily News reported. Once he was out of the cab he did not return, instead jumping into another cab.
Sailema took the baby to a firehouse. Fire Lt. Jimmy Lofaso said that firefighters changed the little girl's diaper and fed her before calling police. She was then transported to St. John's Hospital, where doctors said she was in good health.
"Fortunately, she's in good condition -- excellent condition," Dr. Kenneth Berry said. "She appeared to be well-cared-for."
The girl, nicknamed Lourdes by the hospital staff, is now in the custody of child services.
Lofaso said that the girl, dressed entirely in pink, appeared happy and described her as "a very cute baby."
