WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A gunman opened fire in a Florida fast-food restaurant Monday, killing an off-duty firefighter, wounding four others, and then killing himself, police said.
Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue Lt. Rafael Vazquez, 42, was having lunch with his wife and child at the West Palm Beach-area Wendy's restaurant when he was killed by a man who walked into the restaurant and started shooting at customers, The Palm Beach Post reported.
Vazquez's wife was putting the couple's 4-year-old son in their car when Vazquez went back into the restaurant to get a toy that was missing from a meal they had bought, the newspaper said. Vazquez was shot point bank.
The couple has five children, ages 4 to 21.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the other victims -- Louis Rader, 65, and his wife Antonia Rader, 62, of Jupiter, Fla.; Vanessa Soto, 16, of Lake Worth, Fla.; and an unidentified 43-year-old man -- were in stable condition at area hospitals.
Officials said they didn't know why the gunman -- identified as Alburn Edward Blake, 60, of West Palm Beach -- opened fire on his victims. A police search of his residence turned up no note, the newspaper said.
