NEW YORK - A Russian-born college student in New York City has been sentenced to 300 hours of community service for dumping copies of the Koran into toilets.
Stanislav Shmulevich, 23, pleaded guilty Monday to taking two copies of the book from a meditation room at Pace University, the New York Post reported. The books were found in the toilets covered with feces.
Campus police said that Shmulevich was caught by security cameras.
His lawyer said that his vandalism was not a hate crime because he was motivated by anger at specific Muslim students, not at Muslims in general. Muslims regard all copies of the Koran as sacred.
Shmulevich is no longer a student at Pace.
