LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles landlord has been ordered to refund $9 million to former tenants after the city found him guilty of lying to them.
Darren Stern, also known as Henry Shalom, was found guilty of lying to tenants, refusing to repair harmful living conditions and unlawfully raising rental rates to get rid of rent-controlled tenants, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.
"We will not tolerate slumlord conduct like that perpetrated by Darren Stern. When landlords break the law, they will be held to account," attorney Rocky Delgadillo said.
As part of the settlement of the civil case, Stern will be required to pay an additional $1 million fine along with the $9 million in compensation to former tenants.
The settlement is reportedly the largest involving a landlord in the history of Los Angeles.
