CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Police Thursday captured the second of two men charged in the shooting death of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill student body president.
Members of the Durham, N.C., police force's tactical unit surrounded a house in Durham for several hours before Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr., 17, surrendered, Raleigh, N.C., television station WRAL reported.
Lovette's arrest came about a day after Durham police took the other suspect, 21-year-old Demario James Atwater, into custody.
The pair were charged Wednesday in the March 5 slaying of Eve Carson, 22, a University of North Carolina senior. Chapel Hill police found Carson's body in a residential area near the campus.
"Our interests are in seeing justice served and helping our community during this difficult time," University of North Carolina Chancellor James Moeser said in a statement Wednesday. "We are thankful for all of the expressions of support pouring in for the Carolina family and our local community in these past few days. Those kind thoughts and prayers for Eve Carson's family and our community have made a difference."
