IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa investigators are examining links between the death of a mother and her four children and a fatal crash on Interstate 80 at Iowa City Monday, police said.
Police responding to a disconnected 911 call early Monday discovered Sheryl Sueppel and her four children dead, the Iowa City (Iowa) Press-Citizen said.
The family's tan Toyota minivan was not at the scene, nor was Sueppel's husband, Steven, who faces embezzlement charges for allegedly stealing more than $500,000 from a bank where he served as vice president.
Police responded to a single-car accident around the time of the 911 call on I-80. A minivan matching the description of Sueppel's had erupted into flames following a head-on collision into a concrete support structure. Police officials said later Monday they believe the van belonged to Sueppel. One body burned beyond recognition was found in the vehicle.
